Re problem with AP tuner, might be because of unsteady bowing... If the pitch changes with the bow direction, the qianjin probably needs adjustment or to be retied. Best wishes, David

A weird thing is I have a CD of the ten Liu Tianhua solos played by Wang Guotong but his erhu is tuned to D flat and A flat, a semitone/halfstep lower than the standard D and A. I have a book of tunes with an accompanying CD for the erhu tuned to C/G. I love the sound of the erhu tuned low. Thicker strings might be necessary for a tuning lower than C/G. Best wishes, David

Hey that's interesting, are they "standard" erhu tunes? I would guess they are arrangements of other types of music. Yeah the erhu tuned to C/G does sound smoother, fuller and more mellow, at least on my erhu.

I once heard a song with either an erhu or zhonghu. And it was tuned to about A and E. It was really low but sounded so cool!!

Well, probably you heard the famous "Er Quan Ying Yue", played on a low pitched Erhu actually. Its tuned G D. Some tunes like the Great Wall Cappricio's played on Erhu with C G tuning, but they use special strings called Great Wall strings, which are thicker than usual.

Woh. Never heard of that before. The song I heard was from 12 Girls Band and also I heard it in the movie "House of Flying Daggers". Another was from 12 girls band called "Tang Court Ensemble". The sounds were tuned the exact same in both songs. Was it a zhong hu? I don't think anyone in the band plays the low pitched erhu. But that was very intersting!! Thanks for the information song!!!

I will try to remember to ask my teacher about them at my next lesson. Best wishes, David

It's been a while since i been here but im still practising as much as i can nearly everyday and getting better as the time goes by. Hope all you people are doing good. I was just wondering after what you been saying if i should buy Goerge Gao' QQQianjin www.georgegao.com/qqqianjin/This is supposed to be the benefits - 1. Stabilize the tuning of the erhu open strings. 2. Increase the volume of the erhu. 3. Use one erhu to play many different pieces which require different tunings.4. Easy music transposing, good for singing accompaniment. 5. Adjusts quickly for players of different ages, different hand sizes. 6. Can be used for Gaohu, Zhonghu, Banhu, etc., other similar "HU" family instruments. Has any of you got one of these and if so, is it worth it?

The first two benefits seems doubtful to me, I don't see how it would make much difference. I don't think there are many pieces which are not in D, A tuning, apart from the Abing pieces I can't think of any...maybe Hangong Qiuyue (han palace autumn moon) which is often in C, G.
It's basically a capo for the erhu. It's ridiculously overpriced, it's something anyone can make from a few pieces of wood. It's an interesting idea, but I suspect it's something that's mainly only useful for ensemble playing. Also it spoils the clean lines and simplicity of the erhu!

Well said, you make perfect sense. Another thing is that his tutorial cd's are over priced too but then he must be fully aware that there is not enough material in English. Sometimes i think downloading music is not a bad thing after all when you consider how much money these items go for. I wish i was Robin Hood But as for amateurs, they probably deserve my money more so.
