Hello all.
I received my first Xiao a couple of days ago. Being my first woodwind instrument it took me a while to get a sound out of it but I'm finally able to produce a strong, stable sound and when I'm warmed up, play the 1st and 2nd octaves. I have, however, noticed a lack in Xiao sheet music on the internet, or in lessons. Maybe I'm just not looking in the right place but I'd appreciate it if people could let me know where they find their music and how they learn. I've got quite a good ear so I can work things out fine without music, I'm just not sure where to look to actually find music to work out, popular Xiao songs etc... Thanks in advance!

Hello xiaojim!! Congrats on your first xiao! I wish I could help you with finding music but I am an improv player or write my own tunes. I'm sure someone will chime in with some ideas for you. However, have you looked at some of the more popular online xiao and dizi store to see if they had any song books or sheet music? Some of the popular online shops are Eason Music Shop and Red Music Shop. Best of luck!!

Thank you bsfloyd! Ah I see, I'd love to eventually get to that point but I would think it's easier to start out learning tunes. Is that any way to listen to your playing? I'll have a look, thank you very much!

Hi xiaojim, I don't have any experience with xiao music, but I think it's similar to dizi? Can you read Chinese? I usually just do an image search for my dizi music by typing 'dizi music' and 'title' and have managed to find almost everything I want. If you can't read/type Chinese, here's the characters for xiao music 蕭譜 As for popular xiao songs, here's a page with music, but I don't know whether it's sorted by popularity, but I know some of the pieces there, such as 步步高 are so well known even I have heard of them www.zhaogepu.com/dixiaosGood luck! I too have just recently started on the Xiao. Question to all, what do I do if I can't seem to sound a certain half hole note? 5# for me always sounds too soft and airy, and if I try increasing the volume it just turns into 6... Every other half hole note sounds right and plays easily, are there any cross fingerings for the xiao? I've never half holed a dizi because the cross fingerings always work better.

I would just find music you like, whether its western folk songs or chinese folk songs, you can get the notation transcribed pretty easily (if its not available online) and then just play it on your xiao. I play all types of music on the xiao. Its just a 8-hole flute to me, thats how you should be thinking about flutes.
