taiwanesesong1 ==> queen's tears bamboo by fandizhi (very dense bamboo) taiwanesesong2 ==> bitter bamboo (less dense) queen's tears bamboo sounds very solid rather than soft and subtle. Probably more suitable for making into low pitched flutes and probably very suitable for making xiao. I'm starting to think maybe the queen's tears bamboo sounds too harsh even for a C-pitched qudi. I'll give feedback later when I try the queen's tears version of the xiao. Here's what a certain flute critic says . . . Hmmm.yhey both sound rather bright...the first less than the second. The flow octave of the first sounds more assured whereas the octave break is not so clean. Second one is less sweet and more violin sounding to me. The overtones of the second seem more resonant than the first but its overall sound is probably a reflection of the player than the flute.
Still high ...pitch. Wondrr if you roll in the flute and cover more of the embouchure...do you get a tighter sound? the first seems more solid as a player. Maybe it is the player, but it's also true that the queen's tears bamboo is harder to play than bitter bamboo.

Sorry but that critic has lost me. Assuming the same player plays both dizis to the same standard then a comparison can be made.

The Taiwanese song that I played was 望春風
Patrons who travel on Eva Airways will always hear this music.
Many pieces of Taiwanese music can be awfully sad.

Thanks, Allen, for this post. It's really a nice piece. The title means "waiting for Spring breeze", doesn't it? What does the lyrics of the original version actually deal with?

Here's the wikipedia article on this song: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/B%C4%81ng_Chhun-hongTitle could be translated as "Longing/Craving/Waiting for the Spring Breeze." Lyrics as found in the Wikipedia is as follows: 獨夜無伴守燈下 清風對面吹 十七八 未出嫁 見到少年家 果然標緻面肉白 誰家人子弟 想欲問伊驚歹勢 心內彈琵琶 想欲郎君作尪婿 意愛在心內 待何時 君來採 青春花當開 忽聽外頭有人來 開門該看覓 月老笑阮戇大獃 予風騙不知 I was waiting alone under a lamp, the spring breeze blowing on my cheeks. In the teen I still single, looking at the youth gents. Really handsome and really cute, which a family he would comes from? Intent to chat with him, but my heart was as nervous as playing pipa. I wish him to be the groom of me, I hide my love in mind. Waiting the day that the gent comes to pick, the flower was bloomy. Heard someone was coming, I opened the door to look for. The Yuelao laughed at me for being an idiot, as I tricked by the breeze. Interesting that the translation for "心內彈琵琶" is "but my heart was as nervous as playing pipa." I could also view it as "my heart is like a playing pipa" or "my heart is playing like a pipa" or "my heart is racing like a pipa."

Thank you, Allen. So, as in some other poems and songs, Spring breeze (elsewhere tide or flagrance) is love! A little melancholic song about love expectation. Something like that. Yes, the verse with a comparaison of heart with playing pipa is really interesting. I suppose it expressis a tension. Have a great summer day!

Well, we're all melting from the heat and humidity here, and there was actually instability in the electric grid today. People in London may complain about 30C, but what about 37C with humidity added? (Not mentioning any names . . . . ). 32C is fairly normal during the summer here in Taiwan, and I've lived in 40C desert temperature zones as a child.

Well, there's a lot of Taobao agents in English now and I'm really not sure that buychina is the best one. Now, I prefer to order from Yoybuy. The reason? They are also very serious and you can use Paypal to do business with them, which is more secure.

New information: Yoybuy seems to have cancelled Paypal as a payment method... It's a pity. As I was victim of credit card abuse two months ago, I won't buy anymore from Taobao agents who don't accept Paypal.

Flo I've been playing the low G to xun music lately, but I stumbled across this again. Do you have the scores for the guzheng part of Autumn mediation? I think the yangqin would be as good an alternative. Can you check the other two links please? Thanks Ed

It's been a long time since I played anything except Gusu Xing on the dizi. How is #4 played on the low G?

Personnaly I play with only ring finger of the right hand, but maybe it depends on each flute.

I got kinda used to the finger stretch on the low G.(maybe it's because I had a decent low G to start off with). Now to really play Autumn Mediation, one needs a low F. Is that a stretch too far?

Ed, As I already explained and like you can see on this video www.youtube.com/watch?v=cka1_n8FUWc(and on other professional ones), you don't need a F low dizi for this piece. You can play in F with your G dizi. The easiest way for you to understand what I mean (it's difficult for me to express myself in English and you can't read Western notation), try to follow by ear the dizi player with your G dizi. You'll see that it works. Best wishes, Flo.

Thanks Flo, that's a brilliant idea! This is where my lack of music theory shows. I'll email the link to my teacher and he can help me.
I was reluctant to spend any more money on dizis and I was unsure of the finger stretch on the low F. This also means (in theory) I can use my D to play Gusu Xing in C

No, in this case it doesn't work because the lowest note in Gusuxing is G (low 5). You haven't this note on your D dizi. Another problem: your D dizi has only 6 holes, so you would have trouvbles to play the C without half-hole or cross-fingering. It's possible, but it's not very confortable. In Autumn meditation, the lowest note is D (low 6), not C, therefore you can play it with the both flutes. Personally I play it in G (some scores write it as a possibility), because it's easier for the guzheng accompaniment (no need to change the tunning of the instrument). So, playing one tone lower than the flute natural tone works very well 1) with 7-holes flutes and 2) for scores which doesn't go down more than until low 6. I'll be very happy if you will tell me what your teacher said about playing Autumn meditation. If you look at videos, you'll see that the greatest players play all in F with a G flute. I needed some time to realize this, but it's a fact when you look at their fingers.

Then wouldn't it be simpler to rewrite the score, for example a 7 changed to a 6?
