Hi everyone. Well i have tried to play san liu on pipa recently. the jiangnan folk song i believe. HAHA. i know it is not in my skill level to play it. but i do it for fun, since it keeps me playing. and the pipa part is kind of confusing in some parts. i dont fully understand some things. so i tried to look up some videos. but i found only 1. and it doesnt help me much since its kind of awkward and not together. any sources? it would be great. thanks

I am still very far from playing that... but i have heard about san liu.. hehehe.. i know its kinda complicated piece to play cos you have to keep going back to previous parts.. play.. go back.. play.. go back.. something like that?

haha. the melody is constantly the same, but each time it's different. and there are repeats a lot.

yeah true. there's a easier version(duet/solo), i think. probably you could try that first to get the tune out? before doing the score you have?

Is this the version of San Liu you are playing on the pipa? This, and the version for the modern large Chinese orchestra eg on youtube, is a flashy "arrangement" from the original San Liu, played by conservatory trained professionals and has nothing to do with the jiangnan sizhu tradition. If you listen to the recordings in the blog, you can hear the pipa part in the traditional ensemble versions are nothing like the arranged pipa solo version. I don't play the pipa but I can guess that the authentic pipa parts are not that technically advanced, in the sense that you're not playing super fast with your left hand and fingers flying all over the neck and fingerboard.
