Welcome from a 66-year-old mix of Irish, English, and German ancestry who also loves the guzheng. Maybe I'll also travel the world after I form the "12 Old Guys Band" .

I've been taking lessons for about four years now. It takes me longer to learn some of the techniques, but eventually I get there. Right now I'm working on the tremolo (my teacher calls it "shaking"), and that's coming very slowly. One of the exercises she has me do is to pick a string and do the tremolo on it continuously for three minutes. It's torture, but it has made a difference.
As to being a non-Chinese guy playing a Chinese instrument, you should see the group photo of my first recital. There were about a dozen and a half of Chinese kids, and right in the middle was this 6' 2" extra-large Caucasian guy. Kind of like "Where's Waldo" for dummies. What's even funnier is that I am also learning erhu, and I've been my teacher's only erhu student. All his Chinese students are learning violin. But I love the music, and learning to play it keeps my brain young.
