hey everyone, in about a month, i'll be obtaining my first pipa, and unlike so many of my other instruments except erhu, i seriously would like to begin getting an education about the pipa and not quit. i have some teacher resources, because the plucked string teacher at my orchestra plays pipa. and he has a great and long history in music. and my friend plays pipa as well.
but i want to start off with some knowledge about playing techniques and fingering charts. any help or sources would be great. thank you

Good for you, jetz320! There are a few good pipa lessons of about an hour each downloadable at www.veoh.com. Of course, expect the usual Mandarin. I have a new pipa myself, but have not had a chance for lessons yet. I have not found any books either. For inspiration, check out the terrific pipa video of Zhang Qiang (search on zhang qiang swan). Good luck. Best wishes, David

Zhang Qiang's playing is mad! He made me think 'shit, perhaps I should give up whilst I'm ahead...'
I rate him quite highly (his notes are clear and precise) though as I said, his playing is quite mad.

um....... are there any sources of fingering charts? the tuning of pipa is a little odd to me. since i'm use to the erhu tuning way of one fifth apart. pipa is tuned A-D-E-A.

well i just got my pipa, and for about the past hour; i was trying to figure out where the notes were. its NOT an easy instrument. although having some knowledge of the inner and outer strings of erhu, i can transfer that to pipa. although i have to STRETCH my fingers. i am sure i'll get the use to it though soon. i cant wait to start lessons.

yes i must agree that it is not a easy instrument to play.in fact, it is the hardest of all the instruments found in the chinese orchestra.but when you get the hang of it, it will be fun. so now, just focus on perfecting your basic techniques first before you move on:)

yeah. pipa, erhu, dizi. i chose to learn the all the hardest ones. Haha, how weird. But the pipa is such a great instrument. And many have told me the same thing: once your good, you will enjoy it a lot.

Jia you! Jia you! Me also started my pipa lesson only. Begin mine in January I have to agree that its really a very very difficult instrument to learn. Moving fingers left right up down is a pain... and my 'tan' and 'tiao' until now still got problem! If can find another pipa player here then go, can practice with me

Hi frogprince good to know you have started lesson. Would you like to join us at Tanjong Pagar CC for additional lesson? Sunday 11am to 12 pm. Don't really cost much but you have a very good and patience teacher. This class (including myself) has 7 students and we also started about 6 to 7 months ago. So I think standard about the same. After class a few of us do stay back a little while to practice together.

I dont know loh. I find that i am still a beginner and its really still not the right time to join such orchestral group, even though its a small one. Just imagine i am still at tan and tiao's level leh.... and D major. Some of their songs already go G and F. I'll get very blur one loh.
So how, lets meet up and practice!! Sometimes i practice alone i dont know what mistakes i've made.. and if there are more people, can play songs hehehe.
