Professor Li gave an absolutely superb performance on 10 February at San Francisco's Asian Art Museum to a sizable audience. Many in attendance had flown in especially for the concert and masterclass that followed the next day.
He opened with Liu Shui and closed with Guangling San. In between were just about every major piece of guqin music and his improvisations on themes suggested by the audience:
Dancing Cranes on xiao Snow on Mountains on guqin A poem composed by an audience member that Professor Li sang extempore and accompanied with guqin.
His interpretation of Guangling San was the finest I have ever heard. At one point his playing was so dynamic that several strings of the guqin went completely out of tune. Professor Li retuned the strings perfectly and amazingly quickly while maintaining his intensity and continued to give a fantastic performance!
Awe inspiring! Professor Li's personal warmth and charm was expressed very clearly in this performance and I for one feel extremely fortunate to have been there.
Sadly I couldn't attend the masterclass due to a serious finger injury.
