Hey all:
I MIGHT be visiting the LA area for a few days in a couple of weeks. Spring break is coming, and I might be headed down to visit friends with teenaged daughter.
OF COURSE I would want to check out worthwhile stores selling trad Chinese musical instruments or that have a good selection of trad music.
I know that Carol has a Guzheng shop in Hacienda Heights, which I would try and get to (I have no idea of the relative distances in LA-Land) and would like recommendations for any other shops I ought to drop by and see. Might pick up a guqin or yet another erhu. Never know.

Hmm, I hope it's not too late. I'll post information anyway: www.laokay.com/MusicalInstruments.htm is a list of music stores in LA. The ones that are most likely to have Chinese instruments would be in predominantly Chinese areas such as Arcadia, Alhambra, Monterey Park, etc. The one music store I know of for sure is www.johnnythompsonmusic.com/ in Monterey Park. I'm taking an ensemble class at a local college, and the entry-level erhu I've been renting from them this semester was apparently obtained there at a price of $250.

Thanks for the reply! As it happens, I never got to LA for that proposed trip.
However, I am going to San Diego the last week of June, and would appreciate any references for the same thing down there. Although it's a family vacation, there's nothing wrong with Dad sneaking off to saw on a few huqins, is there? Carlos

Hi Carlos:
Sorry I just saw this post. The only store I know selling Chinese instruments here is Johnny Thompson. Other than that, there is a violin warehouse selling some Beijing Erhus in ridiulous high price.
I don't know any stores selling Chinese instruments in San Diego. In fact, I have customers driving from San Diego here all the time.
Hi csseu:
Chinese ensemble in PCC? I bet we have the same teacher! Were you at the concert on Saturday night?

Thanks, Carol.
It's probably better if I don't try and pack Chinese music in to this vacation along with as the Zoo, Legoland, UCSD visit for daughter, sailing classes, dinner with wife's Aunt, dinner with friends from LA, beach time, Marine World, visit to Scripps, son's surf lessons, and just relaxing. As if I don't have enough to do already.
