I bought an old dan tranh off ebay about 2 months ago... I refinished, and filled in broken areas yesterday I went out and bought new strings and when I tried to restring and tune it I ended up breaking a tuning peg and now I am going to have to replace all 16 to keep them matching... I think that the pegs have seen a better day anyhow :\ does anyone here know of a place that sells dan tranh tuning pegs or anywhere I can order some from? thanks guys, Blakely Neal Jones

There are a few places that could supply replacement pegs such as Saigon Strings and Thanh Cam Music. Google on the names to find their websites. I get mine from Thay Nguyen Vinh Bao, but his design is a little unique so his pegs may not fit your tranh.
Before ordering a complete set of pegs, I suggest trying to get just one to replace the broken peg. You may get lucky and get one that fits and matches. If you decide to get more pegs, you will have some confidence that they will fit as well.
Hopefully this is not too late, but don't refinish the sound board. On a tranh, this should remain unfinished. Anything on the sound board will deaden the sound.
Best wishes,
David

... I just now realized something.... my "dan tranh" has all it's pegs in a line on one end.... and does not have them going vertically down the soundboard like the ones I see now lol I am going to get a picture of it and see what it really is

Hmmm, looks like you have a project, Blakely. It does look like a dan tranh, for what it is worth, but is an older design. It could be a lot of trouble getting pegs that fit. I don't like the look of what looks like a metal tuning peg cover. Do most of the existing pegs fit snuggly enough to hold the strings up to pitch?
If you can find a place that will work with you, it might work well to take some careful measurements of one or more tuning pegs. Better yet would be to send a representative peg to Vietnam so they can precisely duplicate the size and stain. If you are skilled with wood, you might turn your own pegs, or even get the help of a local luthier. I have used a local violin maker for help and it worked out well.
It is hard to tell if all this trouble will result in a good instrument. If you only have one broken peg, I suggest tuning up the tranh with new strings as well as you can and see how it sounds before spending more time and money.
Best wishes,
David

No it isnt a metal cover... I mean I sanded it it and wood dust came off so I am farily certain that it is wood I cannot find a luthier here... I took it down to a local guitar repair place and they said that cello pegs may work.... they wanted 24 bucks a piece for them...... haha anyway I turned them down and now I am looking for cheaper cello pegs anyway I am still looking, when I get it fixed and strung up I will record it so you can hear the tones it creates :]

Yikes, you don't need to spend $24 per for dan tranh pegs. Someone with a lathe should be able to turn out the pegs pretty quickly. Even Saigon Strings only charges $5 per tuning peg, and maybe might charge less per peg for a full set if that is what you really want to do. Thanh Cam in Hanoi can handle custom work as well. I could send you one peg for free, but cannot provide an entire set. Send me a PM or email to the address on my profile if you want.
If you cannot find someone locally, and the VN shops I mentioned above cannot help, let me know and I will check with my own resources. I cannot imagine that a full set of pegs will cost more than $50, shipping and all. I can possibly have a set sent with a container of instruments that should depart within the next month or two. In that case the shipping cost will be pretty minimal. If you are not in a big hurry, that will be the least expensive.
Best wishes,
David
