UME - A new CD by zheng virtuoso M ei Han teaming up with jazz pianist Paul Plimley. This is a series of musical haiku by two powerful innovators, who boldly step beyond cultural and stylistic boundaries to create new horizons in music. Mei Han takes the zheng (21 string Chinese long zither) into realms that no previous zheng artist has dared to dream. The CD is available at www.asza.com

Interesting, sounds great! I'm guessing "za" is a member of ASZA? I looked for UME (named for the Asian plum?) but can't find it on the ASZA website.

I think its a little different in this case because Mei Han is truly a teacher who gives a lot to her pupil and the world of guzheng. She is a Canadian who I am proud to say is my sister in guzheng, in meeting her for the first time, she was the most down to earth and most modest guzheng personality I know of yet. She doesn't have an ego or world dominance air around her at all. She instantly recognized me and made me feel so special. When she is on stage -- she shares the stage, where as a lot of other performers or self proclaimed "masters" -- OWN the stage and its all about them.
I didn't take this post by ZA as a commercial plug at all because Mei Han's work as an instructor and guzheng virtuoso, isn't to market her products but rather, to promote very effortfully the appreciation of the instrument. Mei Han is far greater a musician than any other guzheng "master" out there who simply perform. Mei Han gets involved and she engages her audience. She is an amazing woman. I am so happy to hear that she is working on these innovative projects and I was happy to read about it here, because someone felt that we would also really apreciate knowing..
The post wasn't "buy this CD its only how ever much $$$" atleast.
But David is providing a great point, that in this forum -- we really encourage that you post often to provide valuable insight and contribute whole-heartedly because ultimately that is what motivates each one of us to continue playing and sharing these magnificent instruments!
As an artist I am happy always to hear that other musicians are doing their part, working so hard and enjoying so much to share and spread the beauty and the lessons.
Thank you,
Vi An

If Mei Han is looking for a student innovator, sign me up and put in a good word for me! Lately I am doing so much with guzheng I don't know where my direction is anymore. Help me!

I concur that Han Mei (or Mei Han, the way she currently gives her name) is an exceptional performer (both for traditional and experimental/cross-cultural music) and a very down to earth, nice person. She also wrote the "Zheng" article in the "new" New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians.

I think it's always good to hear guzheng news. They are all scattering around and hard to find.
A personal comment about the CD would be even better.
