I would pick the second one, because the shape for the thumb is better, and the darker parts of turtle shell are more solid. However, neither one will be a favorable choice. I usually give those kinds out for free. I use ones with grooves at the backside to fit onto your fingers comfortably. They are well filed at the edge, so the picks won't make noise when scratching the strings. You may try to check out the different picks on Sound of China www.chinesezither.net/accessories.html The $5 one is well shaped for beginers, and it's easy to use the thumb one for tremelo. The more expensive ones need more finger power to do tremelo. The best one is the grooved ones that are $25 for two sets. That's the one I'm using right now.

Tremolo is a major technique in guzheng. In Chinese, it's called "yao zhi". That is to flip/twist your thumb back and forth producing a stream of notes on a single string.

Hi, I'm new here, and I'm certainly no expert, but I made my nails myself, they work fine and you can shape them however you like, just use really stiff plastic and shape them with a roto tool and sand paper. Ihope thas helpful Tim
