WOW!!!!
I AM BLOWN away by these talented individuals. I'm so proud that Canada is becoming such a player in the "world music" scene. The group that is really putting other Canadian "up coming musical stars" like me is hands down the "ORCHID ENSEMBLE"!
Its memebers are:
Mei Han *Guzheng master and percussion*
Lan Tung *Erhu, percussion and vocal*
Jonathan Bernard *Marimba and percussion*
I correspond often with Lan and Jonathan on line. They are from the beautiful west coast of Canada *Vancouver. Their music is lively, energetic and full of wonderful flavours from all around the world. They are very "Canadian" in that they mix and work with so many influences from cultures of the world. This is essencially the Canadian identity, is we really include and incorporate all other cultures in economy and social circles!
Musically Canada plays a huge and unique role in the world. YAY to Canadian musicians!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm so proud..
---------------
Lets start talking about Mei Han and her majestic contribution to the guzheng world for the rest of us Guzheng lovers out there shall we?!
She is a master, she is so strong and so intent with every pluck of those strings! She commands your attention with her grace and her charming smiles into the audience. She is modest and full of honor! She recognized me right away even before I opened my mouth!!! I was almost emotional as I was speachless to finally exchange real time conversations with these individual musicans.
They put on a free concert at the University of Calgary in the food court and cafeteria location and it was noisey but the sound system drowned the noise out so those of us who wanted to enjoy the afternoon concert could! It was exciting to see such AMAZING response to the music they presented. All these young adults purchasing CDs and spending their lunch hour enjoying something more exotic and "high art" than they are normally exposed to!
I purchaced a CD by Mei Han "Outside the Wall" and a CD of the ensemble "Road to Kashgar".
In the CD by Mei Han my favorite piece is entitled "The Greening" by Minoru Miki (1967). This is an extremely amazing and intricate piece originally for 20 stringed koto, but transposed for zheng. You can listen to the original and view it on the VCD "Zheng Masters Of The World" I think its called. Mei Han is a goddess!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
