I'm working on a music project in my other fan-forum which I frequent (that has nothing to do with music, mind you). So, I started recording some samples to see if my crappy 8 year old computer could produce anything of quality... Anyways, I got someone to host them, and I might as well stick them up here. Note that I haven't finished recording my final piece, which I'll post when the deadline arrives. www.derrenbrownforum.co.uk/forumalbum/guanshanyue.mp3 My first attempt was rather poor as you can hear. Since my shitty computer is slow, there's lots of static skips. Plus, I tried to play xiao and sing and mix those in, but I couldn't hear the qin track properly because of the slow computer, thus, you can hear that I'm not in time with the qin mostly. I also couldn't sing in key for some bits as I was distracted into trying to keep in time with the qin/xiao track... www.derrenbrownforum.co.uk/forumalbum/guanglingsan.mp3 The first two sections of GLS. A solo, and much better. But the sound quality is lacking as I need to record at a lower rate in order to have a managable file size... So, anyone care to share their own qin mp3s?

Charlie, Your two pieces sound great in spite of your computer's limitations. What software are you using to record? I use an Open Source program called Audacity which is available for Unix/Linux, Windows and Mac's. It works really good even though I have a typically cheap computer microphone. There at: audacity.sourceforge.netRegards, Paul Valente

That's what I used. My computer is over 8 years old, and not upgraded much. I need to get a newer and faster one in the future. But I'm gonna borrow my sister's laptop this weekend (if she lets me) to record my final piece (the deadline is approching). If not, then it'll just have to do.
If I get my sister's laptop, then I would mix in a xiao (and maybe a voice) track into it since I will hear the music in time. But if not, then it might be just a qin solo.

OK, I've got three of my recordings online in the wikipedia article. They are Ogg format (you can't upload any other file types onto there); so have a listen. The new computer really corrected a lot of bad quality sounds out of the recording, now it sounds much more better than my crappy ones I did last year (which I'm not to pleased about myself). It sounds much like a normal CD recording, except for a bit of background hums from my computer, which isn't really noticable. No more metallic twangy noise, it sounds more pure and full rather than empty.

Although I have no teacher, I managed to learn a few tunes from tablature, listening to recordings and studying hand movements from VCD/DVD tutorials available (Li Xiangting, Yang Qin, Wu Zhao, Gong Li, ...). By now, I just dare to 'release' an 'easy' tune, Qiu Feng Ci, without singing. guqin.mybesthost.com/en/?RecordingAutumnWindSong2006You may notice the guqin used for the recording is a silk string guqin. Hope you enjoy it.

Your qin sounds better than mines with silk.
Good recording. Tip I'll give you is you need to keep rhythm, then it'll be perfect.

My qin was crafted by Wang Peng and I have played it only with silk strings. I am happy you like its sound!
And thanks for your comments ... a qin musician advice is always welcome and much appreciated!!! Thanks again!!!
