What is the length of the strings (qianjin to bridge) on a zhonghu? I know the erhu's string length is ~15 1/2".

Sounding length of the strings on your zhonghu is up to you. As on an erhu, the position of the qianjin depends on how long a scale your hand can manage. If you adjust the qianjin too high, the stretch in first position will be too much, and if the qianjin is too low, the high notes are too close together.
The low pitch of the zhonghu is covered by the thicker strings and larger resonator, so a longer sounding string length is not necessary. I would err on the side of comfort.
Best wishes,
David

David, Thank you very much for the reply. What do you tune your erhu to? I listen to a lot of erhu music and I never seem to be able to go as "low" as most of the music goes. I have tuned it to d-a, c-g , g-d....what is best? Or is it technique? I play the fiddle a bit and I expected this to be much easier. George PS: Thanks for all the great advice that I have read from your posts.
