speaking in mechanical terms, a regular note plays for about 7/8 of the time written. a staccato about 2/8 or 3/8 of the time. a exagerated form of stacato exists but i cant remember what its called... it plays between 1/16th and 1/8th of the time specified.... i think i read all that about 6 months ago i have no idea if im doing it right(still sound pretty bad) but i usually play staccato with a quick jerk of the wrist on the erhu. The key parts of the staccato note ive noticed is a fast sharp start and end of the note giving it a pop sound. I cant seem to get the end to stop as abruptly.

Well, you need a quick jerk of your wrist, as well as a quick release of your fingers. Or a quick tap of your fingers on your bow (It probably only makes sense to me. So damn difficult to put them in words....)

One way to play staccato is with a long bow covering several measures, where each note is a quick jerk of the wrist while the bow is going in the same direction. A good example of this is in bars 20, 21, 22, and 23 (fourth line down, first four bars) of Xiao Hua Gu. Note the staccato markings above the notes. It's written as pull and push bow strokes here, but the version I have, and the way I was taught, was that these 15 notes in these 4 bars are played with a long la (pull) bow, with short staccato notes. Thanks to Cadenza for providing these jpg scores!!! Carlos

ahh a found the page i was reading before i think the anchor takes you to the accents section but the page has lots of interesting info. www.dolmetsch.com/musictheory21.htm#accentnote the symbols are for staff notation, there are quite a few overlaps but some are different. specifically the staccato and Staccatissimo symbols
