I don't know what you read, but the erhu bow is made of reed (bamboo?), horse hair, and a few other plastic and metal parts to hold it all together. Usually the membrane on the front of the erhu resonator is made of python skin. Since this is a problem in some countries, such as Canada, some makers offer erhus using membranes from other materials. One source online offers erhus with deer hide membranes. I understand that the Canadian erhu master George Gao offers similar instruments. I do not know anything of the success of non-traditional membranes.
Best wishes,
David
