Hi. I just bought my first erhu today and I can't wait to start learning how to play it. However, I did a stupid thing by untieing the nut string not knowing what it was to begin with. I've tied it back now but how tight should it be? Thanks in advance.

There are several good threads that go over this on here already.
In general, you adjust it so that the strings are a thumbs width from the neck.

Welcome to the forum and the incredible world of erhu music. I love the repertoire and studying it.
This is an amazing place to ask questions and get advice. Hope to hear more from you.

Thanks everyone! Yeah the erhu, great instrument. Just to let you know, I'm currently being taught by a little girl Once she thinks I'm already enough I can start looking for a proper instructor.

more than i got ..the closest i found any sign of a teacher is a 8 hour drive away and there is no guarantee that one exists. ... maybe I can just take vacation in singapore or china for a 2-3 week intensive teaching and come back home a master like that keanu reeves movie... Sorry, If i seemed short with you the other day. I was really short on time on a really bad day .

If coming back as a master is possible!!!! (NOT REALLY) Even if you're trained by the best pro teacher there is, you'd have to play nonstop for maybe over a couple months. It's not you pick it up, and after some lessons, you're a pro. It takes YEARS of practice.

I don't think Erhu is as hard to play as most people make out. But to play professional....good luck hahaa There is one French guy that won awards for his music album not so long ago and he has never ever had a teacher, so that should keep you going

He's one of the moderators here, and some time ago he posted a link that had images and video of tying the "nut". Regards, paul...
