Hi everyone! Just wondering if anyone knew of a good Erhu teacher in San Diego, CA (the Chula Vista area). My aunt has been wanting to learn how to play the Erhu for a long time, but never got around to it because there were never any teachers in the area. All the Erhu teachers I have found are in the Los Angeles area (2 hour drive away). So it would be great if anyone could give me any contact information to any Erhu teachers nearby. Thanks!

I believe Jie Bing Chen lives in or around the San Diego area. www.jiebingchen.com/If your Aunt could get her as a teacher there's probably none better. Have no idea if she's taking students and if so at what level. She's a virtuoso. If she can't do it, I'm sure she could recommend someone else. Carlos

Jiebing Chen would indeed be a wonderful teacher to have, but I believe that she is in L.A. You might contact Qing Li on the following list: www.chinesezither.net/resource.htmlQing Li plays the guzheng but may know of an erhu teacher. Best wishes, David

Once again David has revealed my total ignorance of geography south of San Francisco, where I used to live. To me anything that's not strictly LA must be San Diego. Jiebing Chen is in Pasadena.
But an email to her may help find a resource.

All the Erhu teachers I have found are in the Los Angeles area (2 hour drive away). Your Aunt could live in the L.A. area and still be a two hour drive away from an erhu teacher. Carlos's advice is good. Contact Jiebing and anyone else you can find in the Chinese music community in L.A. and San Diego. Someone is likely to be able to open the doors for you. A few moments with Google turned up the following link: www.sandiegochinese.net/htmls/resource.htmThe listing for the Lin-Hua Music Society might be promising. Best wishes, David

Qing Li is my guzheng teacher in San Diego (she uses her married name, Cathy Naples, mostly). She recommended my erhu teacher, Minghuan Ren (mren2sd@yahoo.com). They play traditional Chinese music together in a trio along with with a local pipa player. This is from the publicity release for the trio:
Minghuan Ren is the director of the San Diego Chinese Music Ensemble. He has been composing, editing, and coordinating music for this organization since 2001. He was formerly a composer and erhu performer at the Harbin Opera House in China. And before coming to San Diego he played violin in the Kansas City Medical Art Symphony. He presently teaches music at the Hua-Xia Chinese School and gives private violin and erhu lessons.
