Hi everyone. I notice that there are a couple designs for tuning pegs. I have the cilindar with about 6 or 7 sides on it. It's some kind of wood and is decorated with bone. But I like the swirly kind. Where it swirls, it looks so cool. But I keep on seeing them only on light rosewood erhus. Does anyone know any places to buy these types of tuning pegs? Thanks! www.melodyofchina.com/03images/erhu_dragon2.jpgDoes anyone know what I'm talking about? I'm not sure if this link works out.

My Beijing Ebony and Sandalwood Erhus that come with swirly pegs. Its not advisable to change pegs for your Erhu unless its broken cos it might not fit nicely. You need to do a bit of carpentary work on it.

yup... I agree with song.
It's a bit risky changing the pegs due to the size difference. In fact, the original pegs that comes with my erhu (made in suzhou with reg number) do come loose if knocked by some objects. Heard that it's quite a common thing.

mine does the same thing. well did. When i first got it the pegs would unwind when i got it out of the box. Maybe the humidity equalized, but more likely it could be accounted to user error . Oh, as for the pegs Carve them yourself, learn a new skill and gain a deeper understanding of the instrument. I hope to eventually build my own erhu.. someday ;P.

I've noticed 3 designs: 6 sided, a bit hard to describe but it's got about 25 small ridges, and the scroll, swirl one in the photo. I prefer the 6 sided one, it seems to best match the general design of the erhu. I don't like the swirl type, but that's just my personal taste. Also, some wooden pegs on the string end are finished with a piece of bone or plastic, whilst others do not.

Uhh. So I shouldn't switch. I am though considering of buying a better intermediate/professional erhu this year when I go to China. I'm going to Beijing, Shanghai and Suzhou. Where is the best place to buy a nice erhu around 200-300 dollars? Thanks. Swirl Tuning pegs though!
