HA! Just saw that 40 minutes on ebay. It's a good one for a beginner. The price is kind of ok. I would consider to switch to a white bow though.

Hi i'm Luke and I am new here, I am 17 and I play bass aswell as guitar and piano. I recently have found interest in erhu's after seeing one being played in a chinese restaurant and being amazed at the unique and beautiful tone. I would love to learn to play this amazing instrument. -Luke Oh and by the way, are there any other people in here from the UK? Buying an Erhu for a beginner is not easy, maybe you could fine more in the forum before you go ahead. The quality from different makers varies too, if you are not so sure about how to select one, maybe those from China's main musical instruments facotry could be a good choice, even most of their products could be sometimes be of average quality, but are enough for a beginner.

It's best to look for an erhu teacher first before buying. The teacher can help you on making the decision.
As a rule of thumb, get those with a) white bow hair b) fully made of wood ... (there are some made of plastic parts) c) real snake skin ... (the synthetic ones sound unnatural IMHO)
Good luck in your purchase and enjoy this wonderful instrument.

Welcome Luke. If you are going to buy this Erhu you will have to attach the strings, bridge and the little rope piece (qianjin) yourself. It is fairly cheap and i got one myself. People say the black hair bow is not good but it seemed to play ok on mine with plenty of rosin on the bow, i will say that i bought a white hair bow and it did feel much better and the rosin lasts longer and sticks to the hair better. I knew nothing about the Erhu accept what it sounded like but this forum will help alot and study about the Erhu from other websites, downloading songs and so on.... Either way, if it is something you want to do then do it because i have no teacher and had no knowledge of the Erhu but now im doing ok....Surely you have heard there is many blind Erhu players, look at Stevie Wonder on the piano hahaa. If they can do it, so can you. Of course a teacher will help in a big way and im sure there is things i don't know about. I live in the UK and can't find a teacher. I live in Bristol, what about you? I have lots of material i have been saving up about the erhu and media stuff, so send me a message and i will mail it to you. If you have the extra money, wait, and see if a better deal comes up

There is a erhu player and teacher in london, his name is Chen Dacan, he can be contacted through ukchinesemusic.com Also there's a shop in Camden Town in London called Ray Man Eastern Musical instruments, they have erhus for sale. Obviously the prices are higher than what you would pay in China, but it's an interesting place to visit even if you are not going to buy anything
