First off I have my new Erhu. Very nice instrument. the sandlewood is DENSE. If it was cool to the touch I would swear it was made from steel or lead. It has a wooden flute quality i really like ( i could easily play native american flute pieces on it). i will get pictures whenever my camera gets back.
Since i do not have a teacher, I have been skipping around a little learning to play some songs i like but are way above my skill. (erquan yingyue, huai xiang xing, liang xiao)
I dont know if it is hurting or not... but i am getting to a certain point where the melody gets complex and I get frustrated and switch songs. Playing song by song in the book i have is getting very boring. i can't find an MP3 and midi is too inaccurate so its basically a waste of time trying to play the songs blindly (deafly?) not to mention my book has LOTS of typos/errors. Zhi zhu diao degenerates into random in the middle (it was NOT just me I found out after referencing several other version).
Would someone like to give me some assignments for the next step? Im mainly looking for a set of songs i can find mp3's/cds for and learn to play at my skill level. I feel like if i take another ride through the countryside in spring ill go crazy
The songs excercises I can play in approximate order of proficiency
medium slides are coming pretty easy to me now. short are hard to start and stop gracefully in the correct spots. long the string doesnt appear to vibrate properly.. especially when sliding down on the inside string (even more specifically 4 to (.)5 in G). The string keeps vibrating at 4 for upwards of a second after my finger is finished moving usually transitioning with a squeal. Also related, I have found out that if i am really careful i can stop the string precisely at the center point on inner string (d5... octave point). When i let go (go to open string) the string keeps vibrating at d5 for several seconds. It eventually drops back to d4 usually making noise on its way. I have found if i change the volume right (give the bow just a touch of extra pressure) when i let go it falls back to d4 alot smoother.
As for Vibrato...I am doing it wrong. but it sounds nice and i can control it pretty well(most of the time). Its a combination of the string squeezing and the violin/forearm wiggling techniques. My arm is mostly stationary and my fingers never to that dramatic wavy thing but it works. It works well for the slow beginning of huai xiang xing.
Overall i need to work on bowing. Especially soft starting a note. I cant seem to get the bow to grab the string without it starting at half volume or squeeking.
Feel free to comment or convey any suggestions you may have. Thanks for your help.

- D major Scale (2nd octave comes out right about 75% of the time)
- tian yuan chun se (90% accurate)
- G Major scale (both full second position and spit first/second position)
- First octave of pretty much any scale that follows the "major" pattern
- zhi zhu Diao (i dont like it.. to fast and my copy has too many typos)
- liang xiao(~75% complete from beginning .. about 50%-75% of that accurate)
- huai xiang xing(about 50% from beginning.. about 90% of that correct)
