I am currently organizing an erhu workshop with a master erhu artist in Chicago. As we are still in the process of organizing the weekend workshop, please feel free to tell us about topics you would like covered. We are planning the workshop for a weekend this coming September.
***If any of you are in the Chicago area, we are also considering to offer group lessons too.
Hope to see you all soon!

That is great! Several of us in the Pacific NW discussed setting up an erhu workshop last year, but did not get very far beyond the talking stage. I would love to know how things go with your workshop, so we might get ideas in case we get our plans off the ground.
Some ideas and topics to consider:
- proper setup and care of erhu (eg. bridge, qianjin tying, applying rosin) - ensembles with huqin family (zhonghu through gaohu) - mixed ensemble opportunity with guzheng, dizi, pipa, etc. - developing control of vibrato - musical styles of different regions - how to practice
I understand that Betty Xiang lives and teaches in the Chicago area. Is she involved in your project?
Best wishes,
David

Yes! I am Betti's student. We are actually applying for a grant to help us with this workshop (building relationships between community artists). Thanks for the ideas! We are still in the "talking/planning" stages, but it should not be too difficult (especially with an expert!).
Perhaps, you can fly over to Chicago this fall!
Thanks for the suggestions!

My parents live in Palos Hills so a future workshop is not out-of-the-question. This year in August we are all meeting for a family reunion in Montana, so it is unlikely that I will get to Chicago in September. But, you never know, the airlines could have a fare war. Please keep us up-to-date with developments.
I have Betti's CD Song of Consonance. Good music! Please give her my compliments.
Good luck!
Best wishes,
David

I know its a bit early, but do you know the dates and location for this workshop? Also, can you give me an estimate of what admission might cost for the weekend?
I am on a tight budget but this highly interests me. Some preliminary travel research gives me an estimate of about $400 for 4 nights and round trip air travel from VA. (thurs sept 14th to monday sept 18th i think) of course that hotel might be on the opposite side of the city. in my (very) limited experience with citys, it can take as long to get from one side to the other as it did to get there.
Thanks for offering this. I hope I will be able to attend

I'm in for the workshop. I am just getting started here in Chicago and I'm looking for a teacher. Does anyone have recommendations? I have a pretty loose schedule as well. best, joshua www.telefontelaviv.com
