Hello Bryan,
To download the Cadenza scores, right click on the link instead of using the left mouse button. If you still can't get it, let me know and I will email it to you.
Best wishes,
David

As it happens, I have started work on Sai Ma. A funny thing I noticed is that there are at least two different versions. I have the sheet music to a three-page erhu and yangqin version that is on the recordings in my CD library. Another version from a source I don't remember is longer and includes an improvisatory "Mongolian" section that I really like. Does anyone know which one is "original"? The extended version is more difficult, but has more dimension to it.
Best wishes,
David

hahaha
I like to play the original version and the new version together. The parts i arranged was: dizi on the new version, erhu on the older version.
HKCO Concert Master Wong On Yon and his son, Wong Sun Tat (my friend and one of my advisors) who is is SCO Gaoh, used this rendition and found it very very nice..

I have a recording of the longer version played its composer Huang Haihuai, so maybe the longer version is the original version, I'm just guessing.

Sanmenxia, Isn't Huang Haihuai the same person who wrote "Three Gate Gorge Cappriccio? I love that song, but it's way beyond my present playing capabilities. Regards, Paul...

I just found it. It's on a Hong Kong LP: "Kong Shan Niao Yu, erhu duzou xuanqu", (Birds singing in the empty hills, selected erhu solo pieces), Side B, track 1: Sai ma, performed by Huang Haihuai, yangqin: Liang Ruihua. Apart from "Art-Tune Co Hong Kong COL-3217" everything's in Chinese, it only has the names of the erhu and yangqin players, there's no other info. It also has Zhonghua Liuban played by Tang Liangde, and Slow Three Six by Shen Fengquan and Tang Liangde. I don't think it's the original issue of these recordings.
I aso have a modern recording: Beautiful Sounds of China, Hu Gong/Liu Jihong, Sony SRCR9395, (1993), it's a Japanese CD. All the notes are in Japanese, but I can read some of the Hanzi, it says Huang Haihuai (?- 1966).

Yeah, Three Gate Gorge Cappriccio/ Sanmen Gorge Cappriccio is composed by Liu Wenjin, he also composed Yu bei xu shi qu" (Narrative Music of Northern Henan). Huang Haihuai also arranged Jiang he shui (river water), I think Liu Wenjin is mainly a composer whereas Huang Haihuai was more of a performer/teacher.

Thanks for clearing that up for me -- I remember seeing the names a while back but forgot.
Isn't Jiang He Shui also known as Red River Water? That's another one of my favorites.
Regards, paul...

As far as I know, Jiang He Shui is not called Red River Water, the literal translation is river water. I can't think of a erhu piece that would translate as Red River Water, there's honghu zhuti suixiangqu but's that's "theme on lake hong (lake red)".
edit: I've made a mistake, the "hong" in honghu zhuti suixiangqu doesn't mean red, so it should be "theme on lake hong"

So far I have not found a recording of the original Sai Ma on CD, so am just making due with lesson recordings. The version of Sai Ma I am working on now is a cut-and-paste job with pieces from two versions. From the original version I have lifted a Mongolian folk song section and a sort of free-form cadenza near the end. The cadenza is a challenge for me, but will be fun once I have pulled it together. It reminds me of some matouqin music I have heard.
Is anyone interested in a copy of my Frankenstein Sai Ma?
Best wishes,
David

........... Is anyone interested in a copy of my Frankenstein Sai Ma? ........ David, Thanks for the offer, but I think my teacher is getting tired of me wanting to learn songs that are not in the specific sequence of what he assigns to me. By the way, don't forget to properly torque the bolts on the horse's neck so its head doesn't fall off ;D Regards, Paul....
