Hi:Just need help with one more thing. What kind of string should be used for the qianjin.I was able to find out where you tie it and how to tie it and also how tight to tie it.One thing that is still unclear is what to use.I would imagine silk would be the best, but I have heard fish line will work as well.So would a nylon kite string work. The link that suggested fishing line said the unclear kind,so my thought is they're talking about dacron or braided nylon.Sorry for going on about this subject for so long and thanks for you help so far and thanks for any help on this subject.

Hmm...
I recommend a type of nylon coated cotton string. For those who can't get it, use this idea, should work:
1. use thickest cotton thread you can find. 2. After tying, coat with a layer of UHU glue, the slighhtlychemical one. should be OK

I found that a medium weight hemp gives me a better sound on my erhu. The kind sold in the beading section at walmart. The balls are much cheaper per ft but would be enough to tie up ever erhu in asia.
Mine is a cheap erhu though and it doesn't follow all the rules so your milage may vary.

Thanks, think I will try the hemp first.I play the bagpipes and hemp is used on them so it will be like killing two birds with one stone. Thanks again for the help.

Those with a metal hook? Some Beijing Erhus are fixed with those.
I think it gives off a metallic sound and the metal might damage the neck of your instrument. Prefer to tie my own.

Sung Wah I just installed a metal qianjin (with a hook) along with new strings on my LLS. Previously I was complaining that the A string was dull sounding with lots of wolf tones. Granted, the first sound that came out did sound unnatural but after a short while I was impressed with it's clarity and gone are the wolf tones. I then compared it with my HHR and the results are very favourable. I probably wouldn't use one on my HHR though, or a least I might try it when eventually the nylon thread qianjin needs replacing.
