I don't know what is happening to my standards, but I am really enjoying some Pop/Easy Listening erhu CDs that I have recently purchased. After fruitlessly waiting to find a cheap copy of Chen Min's "I Wish" CD, I ordered it from Yes Asia (www.yesasia.com) along with some CDs by George Gao. Those Japanese pressings are expensive! I have a few CDs by Jiang Jian Hua that are also quite enjoyable. They like to mix in a few traditional tunes, as well as the ubiquitous ErQuan. The George Gao is jazzy, which surprised me. I have not yet made up my mind about jazz erhu. So far it seems more style than substance, but I have more listening to do.
Best wishes,
David

Hi David Karen Han has done alot of work on many many movies since the 80's including - Last Emperor, The Passion of the Christ, Memoirs of a Geisha and many more. Very talented. But as for new style i found a lady on myspace which is talented and mixing western style a little and trying new things, here is her link - profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=42598714One of her tunes Ripening of the something even sounds like reggae calypso at the start or even middle eastern style

Do you mean "the grapes are ripe" on cdbaby.com/cd/weixiaodong ? That track and "sunshine on tashkurgan " are traditional erhu pieces based on or in the style of music from Xinjiang in western China.

I just got an interesting CD of contemporary erhu music. It's called "Blurring Boundaries," and the erhu performer is Yang Ying. Her Web site is www.yangying-music.com. Also, look for an older CD called "Tabula Rasa," which has a mixture of American, Chinese, and Indian music played by Bela Fleck (banjo), Jie-Bing Chen (erhu), and V. M. Bhatt (Mohan Vina). Good stuff.

Yeh i like it, Ying has got a mix of styles but i wouldn't say it is anything new. I been listening to Jia Peng Fang recently and can't stop listening to a song called Rainbow. It might be the high notes that does it but it sounds very sad indeed and this is the picture i get from the Erhu. Also i been listening to 12 girls band which is good for the new pop stuff - www.12girls.org/english/index.aspI think they have the record in Japan for most sold albums.
