Yeah I was watching that auction, I've got exactly the same erhu, they are sold by Ray Man in London, the quality is quite basic and the bow is very low grade but still a bargain at £13 (or $22?). Odd thing is that when I got mine, it had erhu strings although it's more like a gaohu in shape, so I've put gaohu strings on it and now use it as a gaohu.

Well, it definitely looks like a gaohu. The kind where you need to clamp between your legs.

I have noticed lately since ordering a gaohu that there are several types. The traditional Guangdong style does not have a base and is played between the knees. There is also a Shanghai version with a base that is apparently played in the same position as an erhu. I think that the Shanghai version is brighter for sticking out in an orchestra. Is this true?
Best wishes,
David

Hi david! found your gaohu and spoke to Dr yang. You will be pleased, and so will he. That is wonderful, thank you Yinhao and Cadenza! Now we will have to get some good old Guangdong music to play on our gaohus. There is a tune "Niao Tou Lin" or "Birds in the Forest" by Yi Jianquan. Does anyone know where we might get the jianpu for this tune? It would be fun to get a book of Cantonese tunes for gaohu! Best wishes, David

I'm not sure about the non-guangdong type gaohu but i'm sure most players use the guangdong type to play guangdong music.
I've got a book called "Guangdong Music: selected pieces for gaohu", it's got niao tou lin and loads others, basically all the commonly played tunes.

I agree with sungwah on that: it hurts, so said yu qiwei to everyone else... Now he tells me. <g> I need the gaohu for double-duty, playing guangdong music of course, but also Vietnamese. I don't really want it to play very loud, or I might not be so welcome in my Vietnamese music ensemble. My hope is that the sound will be close enough to a Vietnamese dan nhi, and that I can adjust the sound as needed using the traditional method. Where can I get the book Sanmenxia mentioned "Guangdong Music: selected pieces for gaohu"? Thanks. Best wishes, David

Huang, Rijin (1997) Guangdong Yinyue; Gaohu Qu Xuan (Guangdong Music; Selected Pieces for Gaohu). Beijing: Renmin Yinyue Chubanshe (Peoples Music Publishing House)
I got it when I was in China a few years ago. I've also got another one edited by Gan Shangshi. Also Yu Qiwei have edited several books as well, anyone got them? It's a good idea to have more than one book, as there's no one standard version of any of the pieces (except for a few).
Could you not get a book along with your gaohu? I've copied a few pages so if anyone...

I got a book of gaohu tunes via Ebay, and it seems to be pretty complete. I don't know if it is the same book as you mention, Sanmenxia. The ebay item number is 290028843421.
Best wishes,
David

That looks like a good book. No it's not the same the book, but I would suppose it's quite similar, but I wouldn't mind getting a copy though.

You could email the vendor (website is http://www.baymusic.net) and see if they have more of the gaohu books.
