Hi, I've noticed that in most photographs of erhus, there is some sort of white protector or tape on the top of the head where the bow rubs against it. (e.g. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erhu). Does anyone know what this protector is and whether I should look into adding one to my erhu? thanks john

Before I got my good erhu, I used an old beat-up Vietnamese version of the erhu that did not have any kind of bow guard on the resonator. After I applied a small strip of clear plastic strapping tape to the area, my bow moved a lot more freely.
Try some tape if you like. It is easy to remove if it doen't work for you.
Best wishes,
David

My erhus came with a specially fitted plastic guards, which probably on older erhus were ivory or bone perhaps. Mine wore through, and my teacher suggested I use the kind of bandage tape you can buy at the drugstore. I used to find the cloth type all over the place but now I can only find the plasticky finished stuff - but it works well anyways and it's what I used now.

I am assuming this is with several thousand hours of playing it. I have been averaging about 3 hours a day for a month of serious waylaying and its exactly the same as when i got it (when i get around to removing the rosin). Of course, my bow hair doesn't touch it much. when playing the outer string it contacts it resonably hard at times but not all the time. Enough that i can tell if the rosin has been cleaned off of it recently. Playing the inner string it rarely touches it. Am i doing something seriously wrong?

No,nothing wrong. My grandfatherplays everyday for atleast two hours, and I myself play whenever I have time, which is almost everyday for an hour. The thing just got discolored a little, kinda yellow because it's an old zhonghu, but the plastic is clearly and fairly thick.
