I got my mic/pre-amp/interface setup yesterday so I'm finally able to start recording sanxian
This means that shortly, I should be able to start sharing some recordings
Unfortunately, for this context, although I am play a Traditional Chinese Instrument, I am not really doing Traditional Chinese Music.
My first project is a modernized version of "Footprints" (Wayne Shorter) a slow waltz jazz tune in 3/4 that I've converted to 4/4, set a modern pop groove, and sprinkled in some patches of guzheng, erhu in the harmony as well as some Chinese percussion. These are minimalistic for texture as I don't showcase instruments that I can't play. My 大三线 is complimenting the distinctive bass line and taking a solo, my 小三线 is carrying the lead melody line and a shot at a solo as well
My second project is an original piece based on some grooves I've had in my head for years (hence the working title of "Memory"). I realized that with the sanxian, I was mostly learning melodies and parts from other songs. I wanted to break out my bass and work on some creative composing to get back to that part of my artistic expression. I was very pleased that I wrote the grooves and part of the melody on bass, but found inspiration in writing parts of the melody on the sanxian. The groove is mostly pop/R&B and other than doubling the melody and some solo work, I'm not sure where exactly I want the sanxian(s) to fit in
Since this is a Chinese traditional instrument, and I do have an interest in such music, I do want to do a more traditional style Chinese arrangement. Right now I'm thinking of trying "Silent Moon" (Jia Peng Fang) for my next project
Yeah, I'm still working on "Dawn In Naples" (SNH48) but it's mostly just a 'fun play along' because while I really like the song, I don't have any plans for it ( I thought of doing my own rendition but...other than saying "I should do my own version of this song", I really don't have a vision or sound for what that would mean)
Anyway, expect to hear some sanxian recordings soon
