Does the ageing of dizis at home improve the tone?
A five year old dizi costs considerably more than a four year old dizi. Does that mean if I bought a four year old dizi, stored it away unplayed for a year it would sound as good as a five year old dizi.
I bought a budget "professional" C Xie Bin over ten years ago and I remembered that the last time I played it regularly I wasn't impressed with it's tone. But I picked it up recently with a view to giving it away to a charity shop and decided a last try. I was impressed, the tone was a lot clearer, sure it wasn't going to worry DXH but it is now a good practise dizi.
I guess only a dizi maker can really answer that question.

My teacher usually comments on the dizis i play and I usually end up buying yet another one. Lately I've really come to appreciate Huang Weidong, great sounding and easy to play.
I bought an E DXH dizi over ten years ago, stored it away and hadn't touched it since. Today I took it out to play "New Song of the Herdsmen'. My teacher was full of superlatives.
So anecdotally, yes the tone does improve over time.
