Rosin - which end of the scale?
I never guessed this problem was due to the rosin.
For a long time my ErHu has been squeaky in the high notes, third position, giving off very high harmonics instead of the note I wanted. However, on changing rosin all problems disappeared.
I went from Kaplan Light Premium, which is particularly light and rather dusty, to Hidersine Violin 6v, dark and soft.
Both rosins are ones that I have championed in previous years, but they are very different - I feel that the lighter one works best for lower notes and the darker one for higher notes - but this is just my erhu, probably different on different instruments. Sometimes I actually mix them, rubbing on a little of one then a bit of the other - it works for me!

Hello Ed,
The light amber violin rosin works best for my erhu in my area. Whatever works is the right stuff!
I have noticed that on the erhu, everything counts. The strings, bridge, pad, qianjin, rosin, and bow need to be "right" in order to have good results. Of course, that is not the complete list.
Best wishes,
David

Yes, thanks for your reply, the ErHu is a difficult instrument to set up.
Mine was pretty good when I first got it, but now it squeaks and gives off all sorts of strange sounds (wrong notes too!). I've replaced the strings, bridge, bow, etc, but usually I prefer to just play it the way it is rather than mess about. I changed the damper quite soon after receiving it and even though I put the old damper back I could never get it quite right again.
Someday I will buy a more expensive one - would a more expensive one be any easier to set up? I'm not sure.

I'm not familiar with that rosin. I used Pirastro for a few years and then switched to Bernardel. Gold or silver in rosin sounds like a marketing gimmick but I don't have experience with it. Rosin is not that expensive, so it is not that much of a commitment to try out something new.
Best wishes,
David

Wow, it sure looks beautiful! I don't have any experience with rosin, so not sure which I'll end up using. I am awaiting my erhu delivery from Eason, but I also purchased a cake of Pirastro Schwarz.
