Hi,
I've build an Erhu for my daugther and I think it is pretty ok. She would also like to play a Zhonghu so I'd like to build one of those too. My problem is, that I can't find the dimension of a Zhonghu on the Internet.
So I'd like to ask if someone in this forum who owns one could measue some of the dimensions for me. I need especially: - The diameter of the soundbox (top to bottom and/or edge to edge)
- The lenght of the soundbox
- The distance between the top of the soundbox to the first peg
Thank in advance to everyone who is able and willing to help
Cheers
Jones

The last picture shows the plan for the Erhu. The dimensions circled in red are the ones I would need for the Zhonghu Attachments:

The Erhu is not quite finished yet. It needs more sanding and a finish. Also the headpiece is not done yet and the pegs need some work too, like bone inlays so that the strings won't cut into the wood.

Wow that's impressive, what do you use for the skin? I'd like to know how it sounds.

It's a 0.3mm goat skin and the wood is beech. I can try to make a recording of the sound, but it has to wait a little bit because my daughter isn't at home for some days and I can't play it.

Hello Jones, I can help you, because I have a zhonghu (just new) - diameter: 12 centimeter - length of the soundbox: 15 centimeter - The distance between the top of the soundbox to the first peg: 49,5 centimeter
You have built a very nice erhu and the sound will be (I hope for you) also very nice. I loved the sound of the zhonghu and I hope I can learn to play it from the instructions on youtube. I have bowing experience with violin, violoncello and a little with kemence. Have a good time with building the zhonghu for your daughter!

Thank you so much brunah. That really helps a lot! I've just got one more little question. Did you measure the diameter (12cm) linke in Fig.1 or in Fig.2?
I hope I'll be able to do some recordings with my daughter this weekend.
We live in Germany and so it was really hard to find a teacher for my daugter, but we were lucky to find a chinese student who was willing to give her lessons. As I understand, the erhu bowing technique is quite different to the one used for violin. At least that is what my daughter and her teacher worked on for a very long time.
Initially she has used an app called "Bridging the Gap" (you'll find it on google play store). This app explains very good how to bow and has over 200 exercises including the audio. I think this one might be very good if you need to teach yourself.
Well, thanks again and stay healthy
Cheers

I measured like figure 2.
Here in the Netherlands a lot of people were seeking for an erhu teacher. They didn't find someone, so they are using the app "Bridging the Gap" (Patty Chan, american professor in music and especially erhu).I think I'll buy this app. Now,I was using via youtube lessons from another Chinese teacher. The bowing technique is really very different from violin and from cello.
Ah, you are trying to make recordings coming weekend, I am interested, would be nice to hear the erhu!
Have a good time with constructing the zhonghu and stay healthy with your family.
Cheers, Brunah
