Hey all:
I did an erhu seminar last year for a local music school's summer strings program. A lot of the kids were interested. About three weeks ago I got a call from one of the teens who attended, saying that his Mom bought an erhu on the internet for him for Christmas (I had visions of a terrible instrument, but she did some good research and went to Beijingers.com) and he was looking for lessons. I started with him last week.
AND a friend of my daughter's wants to start, too. I'm lending her my second erhu to get going for a week or two to assess her level of commitment, then she can get one for herself if she wants to pursue it. I normally charge $25/hr for other instrument lessons, and that's the going rate around here, so I'm going to be starting a little studio for erhu.
How cool is that?
Carlos quite excited

Hey it's really great to hear that more people are getting interested in the erhu!

Carlos, That's great -- not only will you be getting some good experience, but you'll be promoting the erhu to others.
I'm going to start calling you the "erhu shifu" (二胡师傅)! After all, I think you're the most experienced erhu player on this forum.
谢谢您,师傅 !
Regards, Paul....

I don't know if I'm the MOST experienced erhu-ist here - that's quite a heavy title to bear, and one that I certainly wouldn't claim. After all, I'm still only a lowly ensemble musician.
I'm very glad that I have some young people to share this with. The percussionist for my Celtic group (http://www.celticnots.com) teaches band and orchestra in a middle school here, and I also have lots of music teacher friends - so there are scads of opportunities for me to go into schools and play for kids. And they generally love this thing! You should see the clamoring to give it a try.
I envision a little erhu group in a year's time. There are plenty of pieces that can stand some simple drone harmonies. Add a cello or viola and the sound is thickened up, and sounds great. With two or three students it would be simple to throw together a half-hour program.

You're a "lowly ensemble musician" because of David said once in another thread -- something about "spending less time with family/music and needing to post more" or words of that sort. I would expect you to have a nice erhu group in about 6 months or less playing some nice, small lyrical songs in D and G. Regards 师傅, Paul...

Wow, there is erhu teaching going on in Spokane?! I am going to have to stop thinking of Eastern Washington as being such a back-woods hick place. What are the red-necks going to think? <g>
Those are lucky students who get Carlos as a teacher. I have had a lot of fun jamming on tunes with Carlos. From my tiny experience with teaching, I know it is a great way to learn something very thoroughly. What a joy! Congratulations, Carlos!
Best wishes,
David

OK, since Carlos won't agree that he's the most experienced on this forum, then I say that Charlie/David should put this in Carlos' name/picture block so he can also have a nickname:
二胡老师
(erhu laoshi = erhu teacher)

Unfortunately, I tried but it came out with gobbledy-gook... David can try.

Unfortunately, I tried but it came out with gobbledy-gook... David can try. How am I to do that? I don't have any special priviledges. David

Charlie/David, Sorry to create a hassle for you guys. But now I know where my "Most Excellent Humbleness" nickname came from!!
By the way, I hope that Carlos likes it or I'm going to make sure I stay away from Spokane.
Regards, Paul....
