Usually whenever I see an octagonal erhu, whether it’s from a performer, amateur, or in a store, they usually come with bronze tuning systems. I see them more on octagons than hexagons. Just wondering.

Most octagonal erhus are mainly made from northern china such as Beijing and Tianjin. Due to the sound box it will give out a louder sound than hexagonal erhu. I suspect maybe due to the Beijing erhu tone which is more loud and bold so the bronze tuners metallic doesn't affect so much on it. Compare to Suzhou or Shanghai erhu tone which is more sweet and mellow sound so the bronze tuner might slight change the sweet tone. Below is a video from Eason about Erhu Tones from Different Regions. www.youtube.com/watch?v=k75N3olgTrA

Do you think maybe the idea about the tones of the erhu vary from different regions... a hoax? Do makers purposely adjust the sound of their instruments to a specific tone? What about the movement of erhu makers from one region to another? From what I have heard, there are little differences and most of them are because I was told about the differences.

The first octagonal erhus I saw were from the workshop of Man Ruixing (Beijing), which did not have brass tuners. (I have seen other erhus with brass tuners, but never ever bronze). I associate brass tuners with beginner level, rather than any particular region.
I think that there are particular regional differences in erhu sound depending on the maker and region, which the Eason video clearly illustrates. Probably the differences are more obvious to the player than to the listener.
Best wishes,
David

Edit: definitely bronze not brass
