Guys, I have problem with dizi blowing high notes especially sol and la.. All I can manage is until high fa... Its been months since I started practicing for high notes... sometimes I can manage it; sometimes I failed.. I must say out of 10 attempts; I only manage about 2 or 3 times until now.. have been changing the embochure, I guess I still cant find the correct way... I wonder if you guys have been through this situation (stuck with blowing high notes and finally succeed)

I’ve had similar experience on my Xiao. I realised having a teacher becomes important to: 1) help check for bad habits 2) guide on correct methods. It’s not just embouchre but more encompassing, e.g, proper breathing and air expulsion 3) provide as role model and encouragement when I feel the task is impossible, e.g., high notes. 4) check on the instrument quality. My first beginner Xiao was quite ok but I discovered the 3rd octave notes could not be reached and sustained. I bought a second Xiao that is of performance grade and now have no problems.
I might have given up if not for the presence of a teacher to push my limits and confront my weak points. It’s been 9 months of regular learning and practice, and I am confident to play most pop song pieces. The classical pieces keep me on my toes due to their technical complexity: variation of rhythm, change of time signature, abstract melodies, etc.

I struggled with the high notes for a long time too. My teacher kept going on about the 3 factors (size of mouth opening, blowing angle and blowing intensity). What worked for me most of the time was focusing on the intensity - trying to blow out more air faster. The other 2 factors adjust with time, but that one's the easiest to control.
