Hello guys, I just bought a dizi (first dizi ever) and I'm having a weird problem. I can't get any sounds from my dizi, it sounds like pure wood. Tried in many ways and it doesn't make any sound (yeah, it has the membrane on it). Got it from ebay

Welcome to the forum, purplehat. It is not clear to me what you mean by "sounds like pure wood". Are you experienced playing other flutes? It can be a challenge to learn to get a sound on a flute for the first time. If you can play other transverse flutes okay, then check to make sure that the dizi is not damaged. There needs to be a cork or other stopper near the embouchure. If that has been dislodged, then you will definitely have trouble getting a tone. Leaks from cracks can also make the tone airy, but unless there is a fairly massive crack, you should at least get some tone. A very loose membrane can make it hard to get a good tone, but you should be able to get some kind of sound. If you are not confident in the membrane, you could tape over it until you get a better handle on making a good tone.
If these tips don't help, you might post some photos of your dizi and video/audio of yourself playing.
Best wishes,
David

I've had dizi that did not play because of a leaking cork. It's hard to find, unlike a crack in the bamboo.

Thanks for the answers, actually yesterday I inserted a little pencil on the dizi and then I got the first note when I tried to blow on it. It's kinda hard to get the note but atleast this time is doable. First time in the week I get a note. About other flutes, I had just a recorder before and from a recorder to a flute .. this is a really high change.

HAHA, been there done that. www.youtube.com/watch?v=8zqkWiB0qT8My first day with the dizi was lots of wheezing, then after I got decent and tried the xiao, more wheezing Takes time to get used to blowing naturally. Don't give up!
