Any recommendations as to where to find musical instruments in Shanghai?
A web search indicates 金陵東路 would be the place to go, although I would like to hear about hidden gems!

There's a Shanghai Expo in traditional Chinese musical instruments, held once a year, in which you can buy directly from the makers. I have no idea when it's held though.

Did travel to 金陵東路.
Quite a few shops did sell dizis, xiaos, hulusis, but the selection doesn't look as good as on Taobao. Many of those shops also sell pianos, guitars, ukuleles, and western musical instruments.
