Hi,
As I mentioned in other threads, my first erhu is an ebony erhu with copper tuning peg spoiled. Saw a lot of people selling just the rod on Taobao. So, I was thinking for buying one from them and change the one on my old erhu. Was wondering by doing so, will it change the sound quality? Or is it just the erhu base that is important? Thanks!

You should be able to replace the tuning pegs without altering the tone of the instrument very much.

... The snake skin is terrible both in condition and in the scales (I didn't know to choose bigger ones then). The skin is very dry. That may be the best reason to replace the instrument.

Still with all the talk about bad snake skin and such, I still love the sound it makes. I do have another erhu which I bought recently.

just FYI copper/bronze Qianjin are still selling at taobao. Is it really better than the traditional tied qianjin? Just asking....

I don't know what copper/bronze is, but brass is often used for tuners on lower cost erhus. Copper is not likely to be used, since it is relatively soft. Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc which is much stronger.
I don't think it would be a simple thing to convert a neck with brass tuners to friction pegs. It would be relatively easy to try a new/different neck with friction pegs on your old erhu. Everything on the erhu matters, so I wouldn't be surprised if the sound changes. Of course, this would be a good opportunity to change strings as well. If you don't like the results, then change back to your old neck.
Best wishes,
David

But i do believe there might have some metallic sound. Which is why we dont see pro erhu player using it. But its easily to tune qianjin up and down.

i dont think you can just replace the neck with friction pegs. The size of the neck might not be able to fit in the sound box.

Thinking of getting this, kill 2 birds with one stone. I get to have a dragon head erhu and fix the tuning peg. world.taobao.com/item/42922770639.htm?fromSite=main&ns=1&abbucket=1One thing of concern is , the circumference of my present rod is 5.8-5.9cm. I measured my other erhu which has a 6.4 cm. So I don't know the circumference of the rod they are selling. Also, my rod is oval shape diaganally, is everyone's the same? These are some question I have to ask before buying.

Yes, brass (thanks for correcting) qian jin does have a metalic sound. We used to stuff a very small piece of cloth/sponge/tissue between the qian jin and the strings to cut off the metallic sound.

Also, my rod is oval shape diaganally, is everyone's the same? These are some question I have to ask before buying. As long as the thickness of the new neck is equal to or a little greater than the current neck, it should work. If you don't have the woodworking skills to make the fit, then I suggest finding a violin maker, or someone with similar skills. I have had good luck with this in my area. David
