You'll never guess what. I broke a pipa string whilst I was trying to re tune the instrument! I wanted to slacken the strings so they'd be easier to press (having difficulty pressing the higher notes on the first string with little finger). So, I decided to slacken the first thinest string. Somehow, the peg went lose, and I couldn't tighten it. Then I discovered that the peg actually detached from the socket, so I pushed it back in and began to turn it so it would be alright again. But, I must have tightened it too much coz the string snapped! It would have been OK, if not for the fact that I didn't have any replacement string sets for it! Well, I ordered two sets from Cadenzas just now (I'm not gonna spend the last of my funds on strings by getting them from CCN), but I doubt that they'll arrive before Christmas... Great, and I was progressing rather well... That'll teach me to be more careful and patient.

I've got them the other day and they are different from the ones that came with my pipa. Firstly, they are coloured silver, rather than gold. And secondly, the first string was coiled with nylon, whilst the one that came with my pipa was a pure steel string...
Nevertheless, it does the job, and I'm happy to be back on the pipa progress road again! ;D

Hmmm... *checks strings* Oops! On more detailed inspection, yes, it is all steel (as it is with all the others)! My mistake, got so use to guqin strings... Anyways, it seems to be in coiled, rather than like a piece of straight wire (that was the old broken one). But at least it didn't broke!!!

Has anyone heard these? Regards Anthony

you may want to try beijing 1st string. it makes the best combination when your 1st string is the beijing and the other 3 strings are the shanghai dunhuang strings. they sound really good.you should probably try it when you are performing or something.

I saw silver strings on a website recently, they are kind of expensive, but I'm thinking of trying them in the future. Have any of you tried them? What did you think?
I broke 2 strings while tuning my pipa today. I have replacements for the first string (apparently this string is expected to break a lot, because when I bought my pipa they sent me like 10 replacements for it!), but not the second. I just ordered some more, but now I can't play until they arrive *sigh* I was being so careful too! Oh well...

gretings all! I just got a lovely older pipa, with ivory frets and a nice inlay pattern just at the edge of the soundboard, black lacquered body. I need strings...... what's a good basic set, and where to obtain them? many thanks!
