Does anyone have a clear description to share or article about how to play harmonics on the erhu...what position and finger to use and the actual tone produced when playing harmonics. I have a new piece in the key of D (title something like "Colorful Spring in the Southern Part of China") The following is a list of harmonics in this piece. I realize that my description in awkward but I don't have the proper symbols to write the notes.
3 (with a dot above the note and the little circle meaning harmonic) inside string and second finger (but I don't know where on the string to place my second finger) 2 (also with a dot above the note and a little circle meaning harmonic) outside string and second finger (but where on the string? 5 (with dot above and harmonic circle, using the first finger (but I don't know if this is on the inside or outside string and where on the string) 1 (with a dot above and the harmonic symbol) inside first finger) 5 (no dot above this note, but the harmonic symbol is present)
Thanks for your help. Marilyn

Marilyn,
I haven't played erhu for several years now (busy learning jinghu) but I remember that to get a harmonic, I would have to very lightly press on the string. I think that you would place your finger on the given note.
Hopefully, someone here can help better than I can.
Regards,
paul...

I know how to produce a harmonic sound by barely touching the string. The question is the actual tone the above notes produce and WHERE to place the finger. If the second finger is on the inside string to produce the harmonic note "3" is the sound an F#? What position is this in and is the first finger on note 4 (Fa or G) in order to play the harmonic 3? This is very hard to explain. A chart showing the two strings labeled for the Key of D and including the harmonic notes would probably clear this up for me. Help?? Marilyn
