Hey - Nimen hao? I've wandered over here from the erhu side of life. I've been listening recently to a GREAT CD by an American bluegrass artist, Tim O'Brien, called The Crossing. In this concept album he explores his Irish roots through lyrics and musical styles. For those of you who might not know, American bluegrass and Old Time music is derived from the Scottish and Irish folk music from the immigrant waves of the 17th and 18th century, so there are some great things going on musically. Besides just being a great artist, Tim does a riveting version of the old murder song "Down In The Willow Garden," a tale told by a young man who lured an innocent girl into the woods and, after violating her, murders her. Lots of songs like this in the old English and early American folk tradition. Cheery! In this great version Tim uses a dobro - slide guitar - as a main melodic instrument, and to my ears it reallly sounds like a qin. If it were isolated apart from the rest of the tracks, it really could be a qin tune. Have a listen. Go to his CDBaby site and click on "Down In THe Willow Garden." cdbaby.com/cd/obrienAnd.. Merry Christmas, as well as Happy Boxing Day or whatever that is you Brits have going on. Carlos
