You can use Erquan string for zhonghu sound. Using zhonghu strings is harder to play so its better to use Erquan strings. The sound should not be much different as well since the size of the erhu its the same.
I wanted to order this eco erhu but I end up getting a Ming qing rosewood snake skin erquan hu since the price its slightly cheaper. Plus my teacher encourage us to get a snake skin.

Hi eugene, how is the ming qing eco erhu? Are you happy with it? Did the sound change the longer you played on it? I think they should be quite honest by the way they classified the material on their website. I like it when they say "we choose to tell you directly that our small leaf red sandalwood is from Africa" instead of claiming that theirs are Indian small leaf material.

I didnt get the eco erhu. I order from my teacher is a Ming qing rosewood snake skin erquan hu instead. Ecohu quote me around US$900 for a recovered rosewood 3 in 1 plus shipment and my teacher erquan hu is around US$800 erquan hu.
Yes they are very honest plus you can request the type of wood and design. Eco erhu sound will still change better(mellow/rich) after a few years. Its not due to snake skin but rather the wood just like a normal erhu. But for a recovered(ming qing) rosewood might not have much change because the wood is already very season(dry).
A normal erhu after 4-6mth of playing will sound louder and brighter due the skin.
