Hello! It has been a while, how is everyone? Recently, I noticed that my right arm was stiff. Well, using my right arm on the outer string is much easier than inner string for some reason...is this normal? Let me elaborate: When I bow on the A-string, my arm feels relaxed as well as my wrist but this becomes the complete opposite on the D-string. I have found that this makes the sound less smooth, more "choppy" and I would like to know how to fix this problem. Btw, how was everyone's Chinese New Year?

I'm not an expert on this but it would seem to me that you may need to do some finger exercises (feel your forearm while moving you fingers and you can feel muscles working). When playing the "A" string, you're not pushing the bow in toward you, so your fingers that push the bow inward are not working because they don't have to. Hopefully, someone can post a more medical reason. My wife & I had a nice Chinese NY -- thanks for asking. We spent some time with her family eating a lot of food. I also downloaded the CCTV-1 celebration (~4.5 hours) from YouTube and made a DVD so we could watch it at home at multiple times -- sitting in front of the TV for 4.5 hrs is way too much for me. The parts I mostly enjoy are the singing/dancing of the various ethnic groups in China, and of course, anything that has to do with Beijing Opera! Here's the link if anyone is interested: CCTV-1 Chinese New Year Celebration (Year of Monkey)Regards, paul...

Woah . . . that is really interesting! So the problem is not in my arm but really my fingers! Thank you! Glad you had a nice New Year

Hi SuLi Sues YU
How are you doing the shift from A string to D string? It should be a rotating motion of the whole bow, not simply pulling the strings. The bow is held rather differently for each string.
I did not realize this myself for quite some time when I first started learning. It does occur to me that you might be making the same mistake. I only leaned it by accident when talking to an experienced player.
It is difficult to explain, and not well shown in videos. I don't have my instrument with me at the moment so its difficult to go into more detail.
