Some people have been asking about the earthquake in Taiwan. Fortunately the devastation was not island-wide compared to the 1999 earthquake that killed 2,415 people. Most of the damage and casualties this time was localized in southern Taiwan, which composes at least 20% of Taiwan's entire population of roughly 22 million. The earthquake today happened one day before Chinese New Year's Eve, which not only dampens the holiday mood, but also abruptly delays planned family reunions as the high speed rail and regular rail were offline most of the day today. Even worse, many people who are abruptly homeless, who have lost loved ones, or who are working overtime to save people are robbed the chance to enjoy a happy Chinese New Year's Eve family feast, which is the equivalent of a Thanksgiving and Christmas feast combined.
