how do i read this music sheet? i know that the numbers are notes and i know the notes, but what does the lines arching from say a 1 to a 1 mean and the dots above the numbers. do they tell me how long to hold it? i am still very new

Welcome to the forum, Anthony. There is a pretty good article on jianpu (numeric) notation on Wikipedia. That should give you a good start. There are also some posts on this forum. Search on jianpu to check them out.
Jianpu uses some conventions from staff notation. A curved line between number notes indicate a slur or tie. Like with staff notation, if two of the same notes are tied, you don't articulate the second note, but just continue the note for the added value. The lines beneath the notes indicate the time values. No line means the note is a quarter note, one line means the note is an eighth note, two lines is a sixteenth note.

Hi, dots above or below the numbers indicate whether you're playing in a higher or lower octave.
Dot above: high octave Two dots above: even higher octave Dot below: low octave Two dots below: even lower octave
etc.
