How's learning erhu going for everyone here?

Since I started on classical guitar lessons (I'm also hoping these skills will be transferable to playing the zhongruan/liuqin) I'm finding it difficult to put enough practise time on the erhu.
I've gone back to Liang Xiao and Sai Ma but my teacher plays Sai Ma at such an incredibly fast speed.

I've gone back to Liang Xiao and Sai Ma but my teacher plays Sai Ma at such an incredibly fast speed. Sai Ma is often played much faster than is necessary, or musically tasteful. It is a horse race, not a formula car race. Several years ago I switched my lessons from erhu to guzheng. I still play erhu/zhonghu now and then with my teacher's ensemble. Lately I have been learning a Vietnamese Hat Xam tune on zhonghu. Hopefully it will be ready for Tet next year (Lunar New Year). Best wishes, David

I have been taking classes and private tutoring for a few years now here in Taiwan. I would agree that Sai Ma is often played way too fast. My teacher doesn't like the song so much, but teaches it because everyone thinks its cool. It is kinda cool to play (note: I only play it at slow to moderate). We are getting ready to play 你怎么说 Ni Zenme Shuo (What do you have to say?) for a second time at a performance. After a few years I still find bowing correctly is still so important to keep practicing and also easy to let slide. I have quite alot of erhu jianpu collected if anyone is interested.

I agree that Sai Ma is often played ridiculously fast but I've also got the backing track for it and that is very fast too.

The crowds do love a fast tune, the faster the more impressive to them. I haven't been back to my lessons for months, been too lazy to practice my assignments and don't want my teacher to kill me.
Cloudlesszen, I do like erhu jianpus, can I message you privately about it?

Agreed, I kinda like seeing someone play Sai Ma crazy fast with some improv stuff thrown in. Minh, yes of course. I may or may not have something you could use!
