Hello! I started playing erhu a few months at age 12. However I feel very discouraged because many famous players like Yu Hongmei and Jia Peng Fang started at early ages like 6 or 8. Do you think this is a serious setback or will I be able to catch up will hard work?!?

Yes, with hard work anyone at any age can master an instrument. However, I don't think you should focus so much on comparing yourself to others. Instead, focus inward and be aware of your progress and shortcomings.
Besides, if the answer was no, would you stop playing erhu? If so, you might be playing for the wrong reasons. Play because you enjoy the instrument, not to be 'good' or to exceed others. In my humble experience, doing anything for those reasons just leads to unhappiness, even if you do succeed.

When I was a kid both my brother and sister were learning the piano. Living in a small flat, the sound of endless scales early Sunday morning (when I was asleep) put me off music.
I took up Chinese musical instruments when I was 43? and classical guitar recently. I've never be a concert player but the journey is fun anyway.
12 is no way too late.

Thank you for the advice, and kenste, I wouldn't stop playing erhu if the answer was no, I'd just start practicing harder! Erhu is way to beautiful and fun to just stop:)
