I just finished learning the song "Beautiful Night" by liu tianhua and decided to look up a video of a professional playing the song out of sheer curiosity. i stumbled on a rendition by song fei and it really blew me away. thought i'd share: www.youtube.com/watch?v=w5wRhl9NO4M

haha, is that THE david dahl? well played! and yeah, it certainly feels quick to me. i moved to NYC so i had to find a new teacher, and the woman who instructs me now pushes me really hard. when she first assigned the piece, i could barely crawl through the first few lines. but after a few weeks of practicing it with her, i can play the entire thing fairly comfortably. at first i was frustrated, but after a while i realized she wasn't having me use the erhu to learn the song, but rather having me use the song to learn the erhu...... ... anyways, i noticed your comment on david's video. do you want me to take a photo of the jianpu and upload it here? i have some notation on it but i think it's still readable.

Thanks Kenste, I have the jianpo to Liang Xiao. It's been a while since I played it and had forgotten parts of it. I was going to ask my teacher but then we had such a good time dueting on "Silent Moon". Next time.
The trouble is we spend so much time on one piece I get totally sick of it and when I progress onto something else I don't (rarely) touch it again.
I take classical guitar lessons as well and he also takes a similar view. "It's not good enough just to be able to play the notes".

Thanks for the kind words, gentlemen. I think that Liang Xiao is a beautiful tune that can be enjoyed for a lifetime. I prefer it performed solo though, rather than with a large orchestra. Maybe it would sound good as a duet with guzheng. Doesn't need anything else to sound complete, as far as I am concerned.
Best wishes,
David
