How do you know when you are ready for a new erhu? Is it something to judge by yourself or will your teacher tell you? My teacher wants me to get a new bow, and I was wondering if I should get a new erhu along with it. I am not sure how to judge though!

I guess like most people I upgraded my erhu well earlier than I needed to. It depends what erhu you currently have. Even my first erhu. a second hand ebony MRX is a much better than my teacher's one.
Do I regret having three erhus? No, because I'm into it for the long term and each of them are fine erhus. I only regret buying inferior instruments and maybe my zhongruan and liuqin. But that is another story.

Thank you for your advice! I will take this into mind. However, the erhu I currently have is not of good quality, so maybe I will upgrade sooner.

Thank you for your advice! I will take this into mind. However, the erhu I currently have is not of good quality, so maybe I will upgrade sooner. I went ahead and bought a very nice erhu after I had decided I liked the instrument after about a month of playing. I think it was a good decision. When I have a beautiful instrument, I feel more compelled to dedicate myself to it. The more you play an erhu, the more its sound changes. In this sense, I feel like my erhu is growing with me, as if we both started learning together. I have a strong affinity with my erhu, and I consider it my friend. If you are serious about learning this instrument, I would recommend buying a nice erhu now. However, a lot of people recommend waiting until you've reached the limits of a beginner erhu (which usually comes at 3rd position) before purchasing a better one. Different strokes for different folks-- only you know what's best.

Oh. So I have learned third position but I feel that I can still get more out of my erhu. Thanks for your help!

Hi,
I would say, buy as many as you can afford and as many as you want. My first one came in the mail as a broken piece of junk, I ordered a different one from another place, then eventually created a collection of them.
If you got the money, set your sights high on the very best you can afford. Quality is Quality, after all, and mostly, you do get what you pay for.
just thoughts,
