And I don't mean Jiu Kuang.
My qin buzzes in exactly one spot--and it's an unfortunate spot! 7th hui on the 7th string, otherwise known as "the crucial high tonic for angry pieces". That's right, some of the best angry, stark phrases in the entire repertoire are marred by BZZZZZZZZ when I slide up to that position. I wonder what could be causing this. Is it likely to be an imperfection in the smoothness or curvature of the lacquer? How should I deal--and what's with the little slats of wood some qin players jam under the ends of their strings?

when i had a similar prob, my teacher neatened up the stray string ends under the qin and the 2 goose feet and that solved it.

The little bits of wood ander the 'bridges' can lift the string off the top board just enough to eliminate the buzzing. If it's a long-standing problem check that there isn-t a slight kink in the string where it buzzes. (My first string always buzzed at one position and the teacher rubbed the lacquer down to try to eliminate noise. That didn't work so I lived with the bussizng for 2-3 years. Then I changed the strings - no buzzing.)
The last possibility is is that changes in humidity between New England and Chcago might be leading to distortion of the top board. If so, don't try to change the top board for a good few months yet. The changes are likely to continue for a year or so, and you need to be sure that eveything has settled down before you consider any permanent alterations to the qin.

Now i'm getting 'ringing' sounds on a specific spot on string 7! It is at the 5 hui (and sometimes the 7th if I tune it high enough). I've tried de-tuning, re-stringing, tuning high, etc and it still doesn't get rid of it. In fact, tuning it high makes the ringing extend all the way down the length of the string! I also noticed that there is also ringing on 6th string 4.7 hui (exactly the same tone as 7th string 5th hui)! There is still ringing even after I took string 7 off... I've also pull and pushed the string forward and towards me to see if it is the same spot on the surface but that doesn't make the ringing go away so I assume it is not a lacquer surface problem.
I have a feeling it might be the strings. I'll change them tonight and see if it corrects it. It's just so strange because it just happened all of a sudden the next day when I went to play it...
