So I went with my mom and grandma to see a play called "The White Snake" (白蛇转) today. It was pretty good!
The story is about a woman named White Snake, a snake spirit from the top of the mountain, who studies magic for hundreds of years. She and her friend, Green Snake, journey to the mortal world where they turn into humans. White Snake meets a mortal, falls in love, and...yeah. It's one of those boy-meets-girl-and-weird-stuff-happens types of plays.
This was an adaptation, so I know the story isn't totally accurate. The music was really nice. I was so tempted to get the soundtrack after the show, but I didn't. The staging was AMAZING. The only complaint I have is the dialog. It just sounded too modern.
If you get the chance to see this show, see it. It's really awesome.

Actually, the snake studied for at least a thousand years to learn how to assume human form.
There are so many adaptations of this story:
Here's the movie adaptation:
Here's a TV adaptation:
Anyway, just type "白蛇傳" on youtube, and you'll see what I mean.

Thanks for the link to the movie. Actually I knew the story because I'm completely in love with the dizi concerto inspired by it. Here is a version played by the Little Giant Chinese Chamber Orchestra in Taipei (Taiwan): v.youku.com/v_show/id_XMzg5MDQ2MzAw.html

Well, it was an adaptation. I was typing that post from memory, and I remembered hearing hundreds, not thousands. But there are a ton of adaptations out there.
I didn't know there was a movie or TV adaptation. I'll have to check those out!
